Alabama approves first Workforce Pell program for lineworker training
Governor Kay Ivey has announced that Lawson State Community College’s Lineworker Training Program is the first in Alabama to receive state approval through the Workforce Pell process. This initiative expands federal Pell Grant eligibility to approved short-term, career-focused training programs designed to prepare individuals for high-skill, high-wage, or in-demand occupations.
The 10-week program at Lawson State provides over 400 hours of hands-on training, including pole climbing, power line installation, truck driving, and ladder safety. Developed in partnership with Alabama Power, the program aims to meet the needs of the electric utility industry. The approval follows a state initiative launched this summer to connect financial assistance with proven training programs that demonstrate strong completion and employment outcomes.
