Alabama expands workforce training and manufacturing support

Alabama has reached two significant milestones in workforce development and industrial support. Lawson State Community College’s Lineworker Training Program has become the first to receive state approval through the new Workforce Pell process. This initiative expands federal Pell Grant eligibility to approved short-term programs that prepare students for high-skill, high-wage, or in-demand occupations.

The 10-week lineworker program, offered in partnership with Alabama Power, provides over 400 hours of instruction in areas such as pole climbing, power line installation, and ladder safety. The Alabama Department of Workforce administers the approval process to ensure programs meet specific requirements regarding employer demand, job placement, and completion rates.

Separately, the Alabama Training Network (ATN) has been awarded $2.19 million from the U.S. Department of Commerce’s National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). As Alabama’s Manufacturing Extension Partnership Center, ATN will use the funds to assist small and medium-sized manufacturers in adopting advanced technologies, including robotics, automation, artificial intelligence, and additive manufacturing. The award aims to strengthen domestic supply chains and improve industrial productivity across the state.
