Alabama faces extreme heat with high indices and rising energy demand

Alabama is experiencing extreme summer heat, with heat indices approaching 110 degrees. The Alabama Department of Public Health (ADPH) has issued warnings for residents attending outdoor events, such as the Alabama football season opener at Bryant-Denny Stadium and Labor Day celebrations.

Medical professionals report a significant increase in emergency room visits related to heat exhaustion, heat stroke, and dehydration. DCH Regional Medical Center has noted an uptick in illnesses, particularly among outdoor workers. Physicians warn that heat exhaustion can rapidly progress to heat stroke, which is a medical emergency.

In response to the prolonged heat, Alabama Power reported that cooling demand increased by as much as 40% in August compared to the previous year. The company is providing guidance to help customers manage rising energy costs, such as maintaining air conditioning efficiency, adjusting thermostats, and using blinds to block sunlight.
