Heat wave spreads, cooling centers expand nationwide
Entities: National Weather Service · Kansas · Missouri · Arizona · Death Valley
Overview
The extreme July heat wave that began in the Deep South has continued to expand across the Midwest and Southwest. By late July, the National Weather Service issued extreme‑heat warnings for dozens of counties in Missouri and Kansas, with heat‑index values reaching 116 °F in Missouri and 115 °F in Kansas. A separate warning covered northwest Arizona, southeast California and southern Nevada, projecting daytime highs of 108‑120 °F, including the Death Valley region.
More than 80 million people in the central United States now face heat advisories or warnings, with overnight lows lingering in the upper 70s, limiting physiological recovery and driving a sharp rise in heat‑related illness. Existing cooling centers—operating 24 hours in libraries, churches, senior centers and recreation facilities—from Alabama to New York, Indiana and Ohio remain open to provide relief.
Additional advisories include a heat advisory for Kiowa County, Colorado (high near 105 °F) and an extreme‑heat warning for parts of Southern California such as Lake Los Angeles, Lancaster and Palmdale, where triple‑digit highs are forecast. The Storm Prediction Center placed a Slight Risk for severe thunderstorms, citing dangerous wind, hail and flash‑flood potential across the Ohio Valley and Great Lakes region.
The NWS continues to urge residents to stay hydrated, limit outdoor activity, use air‑conditioned spaces and check on vulnerable neighbors. A cold front is expected early next week, which should lower temperatures into the upper 80s‑low 90s across much of the affected area.
