Alagoas prosecutors confront mayoral corruption over land overpricing and electoral abuse

The Public Ministry of Alagoas (MPAL) has filed an urgent injunction accusing the mayor of Delmiro Gouveia and her sister of a scheme that inflated the price of a 209,000‑square‑metre land parcel by 371%, resulting in a multimillion‑real loss for the municipality. The petition alleges nepotistic administration, artificial valuation and a subsequent donation of part of the land to the state university, prompting a request to suspend the friendly expropriation deed and block related legislation.

Separately, the Regional Electoral Court of Alagoas (TRE‑AL) is reviewing a case seeking the removal of the mayor and vice‑mayor of Piaçabuçu. The officials are accused of using public funds for campaign events, distributing food and gifts, and leveraging municipal resources for electoral advantage in the 2024 elections. Although three judges have voted for cassation, the decision remains pending, creating administrative and political instability in the municipality.

Both investigations highlight ongoing concerns about misuse of public resources and abuse of power within Alagoas municipal governments.
