Alagoas police investigate death of two-month-old baby

In Senador Rui Palmeira, Alagoas, authorities are investigating the death of two-month-old Anny Emanuelly Nunes da Silva. The infant was found with bruises on August 30.

The child's 19-year-old father was arrested on suspicion of physical abuse. While initial reports from the mother suggested the father was responsible for the maltreatment, the father has since denied the allegations in a police statement. He claimed the child fell from a bed twice and that the bruises were a result of those incidents. He further stated that he attempted to perform chest compressions to revive the child after she experienced respiratory difficulties.

The Civil Police are currently awaiting a report from the Medical Legal Institute (IML) to determine the exact cause and circumstances of the death. The investigation is being led by the 2nd Regional Police Station of Santana do Ipanema.
