Alan Jones's sexual assault trial begins in Sydney
Former radio broadcaster and ex‑Wallabies coach Alan Jones appeared at the Downing Centre Local Court in Sydney on Monday as his judge‑only trial opened. He faces 22 charges – 20 counts of indecent assault and two of sexual touching – alleged to have occurred between 2003 and 2020 against six men, one of whom was 17 at the time. Jones has pleaded not guilty and denies all wrongdoing.
The case is being heard by Judge Glenn Walsh without a jury. Prosecutor Georgina Wright said the court expects more than 70 witnesses and that the proceedings could last several weeks or months. Police Strike Force Bonnefin began investigating the allegations in March 2024, leading to Jones’s arrest at his Circular Quay apartment in November 2024. Jones was a long‑time host of Sydney’s 2GB radio station and coached the Australian national rugby team, the Wallabies, to a Grand Slam in 1984.
