Alaska's Delta Fire Prevention Area Burn Permit Suspended Amid Red Flag Alerts Across Five States

The National Weather Service issued Red Flag Warning alerts covering at least five U.S. states – North Dakota, South Dakota, Nebraska, Montana and Alaska’s Delta Junction area – due to a hazardous mix of high winds, low humidity and warm temperatures that could accelerate wildfires.

In response to the critical fire‑weather conditions, the Alaska Division of Forestry & Fire Protection suspended all burn permits in the Delta Fire Prevention Area on May 10, 2026. Residents are prohibited from open burning of debris, brush piles or using burn barrels, though small cooking and warming fires remain allowed with caution. The warnings advise people to avoid any activity that could spark a fire, as rapid spread is expected across grassland and rural areas.

Authorities stressed that the dangerous conditions may persist into Tuesday and throughout the week, urging heightened vigilance and adherence to fire‑safety guidelines to prevent uncontrolled wildfires.
