2026 US & Canada Wildfire Surge Expands
Overview
By mid‑July the 2026 wildfire season continued to overwhelm resources across the western United States and into Canada. The National Interagency Fire Center kept the national preparedness level at 4, deploying roughly 17,000 firefighters, hundreds of engines, bulldozers, helicopters and air‑tankers in more than a dozen states. Complex Incident Management Teams remain 35‑38, a number sharply lower than a decade ago, heightening concerns about crew fatigue as the high‑fire‑danger outlook persists through September.
The season has already claimed three Colorado firefighters and a helicopter pilot, echoing earlier fatalities. In Colorado, the Aspen Acres fire stayed the state’s largest blaze at about 97,000 acres and 28 % containment, while the Ferris and Gold Mountain fires prompted evacuations and road closures.
Across the border, a surge of Ontario and northern Minnesota fires generated smoke plumes that, driven by a record‑breaking heat dome, spread over the U.S. Midwest and Northeast. Hazardous air‑quality alerts affected more than 100 million people, with health officials urging indoor shelter, high‑efficiency filtration and N95 masks.
Canadian authorities responded with preventative bans: British Columbia’s District of Tofino prohibited all Category 1 campfires from July 16, and Ontario announced a Restricted Fire Zone covering most of its Northwest Region, banning open‑air burning until further notice. These measures aim to curb human‑caused ignitions amid the ongoing fire‑hazard conditions.
