București: Traffic reopens in Piața Unirii following construction progress
Traffic is reopening on a major route in Bucharest's Piața Unirii, connecting Splaiul Independenței and Bulevardul Corneliu Coposu. This reopening follows the completion of one phase of the Planșeul Unirii construction project, which was finished ahead of schedule.
Sector 4 Mayor Daniel Băluță stated that sidewalks, the roadway, and road markings have been completed to ensure safe passage. While this specific section is open, the overall construction project continues. Currently, 15 of the 19 sections of the new slab are finished, and work is progressing on the fourth stage near the Horoscop restaurant.
Authorities expect to lift the remaining traffic restrictions in the area by September. The long-term project includes the reconstruction of vital infrastructure to improve urban mobility and safety. Additionally, work on a new tram line connecting existing routes is projected to begin in the spring of 2028, coinciding with the rehabilitation of the Unirii pedestrian passage.
