Albania faces economic pressure from rising oil and food prices

Albania is facing economic pressure due to rising global oil prices and increased inflation. Consumer price inflation rose to an average of 3.3% during July and August, driven largely by the rising costs of fuel and unprocessed food. This trend aligns with broader market movements caused by geopolitical tensions in the Middle East.

Fuel costs are impacting multiple sectors of the Albanian economy. In agriculture, fuel accounts for approximately 40% of mechanical service costs, with plowing and harrowing rates increasing by 25–33%. Additionally, rising transport costs have disrupted the import of raw materials for organic fertilizer production and increased agribusiness transport costs by up to 50%.

While inflation for services and rent has declined due to better supply and demand balance, domestic pressures remain. These include a tight labor market and rapid wage growth. Despite these challenges, the Albanian economy showed solid growth in the first half of the year, with economic activity increasing by 3.6% in the second quarter.
