Albania food prices rise five times faster than EU average
Food prices in Albania have risen significantly, outpacing the European Union average. According to Eurostat data, food and non-alcoholic beverage prices in Albania increased by 3.2% in July 2026, which is five times faster than the 0.6% increase seen in the EU. This trend marks a shift from 2022, when Albanian food prices were approximately 85% of the EU average, to 2025, when they reached 102.9%.
Albania recorded the highest food inflation rate in the Western Balkans, followed by Kosovo at 2.7% and Montenegro at 2.3%. In Albania, food products account for approximately 34.46% of the consumer basket used for the Harmonized Index of Consumer Prices. The rising costs are particularly notable in dairy and egg products, which are over 30% more expensive than the EU average.
Economic commentary suggests that while transparency can help consumers, sustainable price reduction requires addressing competition, productivity, and transport costs rather than relying on government mandates or digital price-comparison tools.
