Albania plans sovereign Bektashi state in Tirana
Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama is pursuing a project to establish a sovereign Bektashi state within the capital, Tirana. The proposed enclave, covering approximately 11 hectares, would function similarly to the Vatican or the Sovereign Military Order of Malta, featuring its own administration, borders, and passports.
Christopher Hyland, a 78-year-old former advisor to U.S. President Bill Clinton, is reportedly acting as a special envoy to help transition this political vision into a formal state-building project. Hyland has previously been involved in diplomatic processes regarding Kosovo's independence and peace talks in Northern Ireland.
Analysts suggest the initiative aims to position Albania as a global center for moderate, liberal Sufi Islam, potentially serving Western diplomatic interests by promoting a tolerant religious model. However, experts note that realizing such a micro-state would require significant constitutional changes in Albania, international recognition, and complex diplomatic agreements.
