Developments in Bektashi sovereignty proposals in Albania
Overview
The Bektashi community in Albania is navigating complex developments regarding the proposal to establish a sovereign Bektashi Order state in Tirana. Originally proposed by Prime Minister Edi Rama, the envisioned 11-hectare enclave would feature its own administration, borders, and passports. Preparations reportedly include the consideration of a new currency, the ‘bek’, which may be indexed to the price of gold, and the appointment of international representatives, such as an ambassador-general and a U.S. representative.
While the project aims to promote a liberal Sufi tradition as a global center for moderate Islam, it has faced significant domestic opposition. Critics argue the initiative lacks transparency and may violate the Albanian Constitution’s definition of the nation as a unitary and indivisible state. The Muslim Community of Albania has also expressed concerns that the move could incite religious division and disrupt existing interfaith harmony.
In a significant shift, Bektashi leadership has issued a public notice rejecting the claims of a sovereign ‘Bektashi State’ or ‘Bektashi Vatican’. The leadership emphasized that Bektashism is a ‘spiritual path of wisdom’ rather than a political movement, asserting that spiritual authority cannot be established through political sovereignty or the issuance of passports. The notice maintained that the historical and spiritual center remains the ‘House of Pir’ in Nevşehir, Turkey, and stated that any attempts to relocate this center or violate traditional rules regarding the residency of the Dedebaba are considered invalid under Bektashi law.
