Albania Prime Minister Edi Rama Faces Nationwide Protests Over Kushner‑Linked Resort

Mass protests have engulfed Albania for more than three weeks, with thousands gathering daily in Tirana demanding the resignation of Prime Minister Edi Rama and his entire government. The demonstrations, led by opposition figure Dritan Goxhaj, cite rampant corruption, nepotism and a perceived erosion of democratic standards under the Socialist administration.

A central grievance is the approval of a luxury resort project backed by U.S. investor Jared Kushner, which protesters say threatens protected environmental zones and cultural heritage sites. Demonstrators have also warned of possible illegal strategic investments, chanting that “Albania is not for sale.” The opposition is calling for a non‑partisan, twelve‑month transitional government to oversee constitutional reforms, including limits on the prime minister’s tenure and changes to electoral and party‑financing laws.

Prime Minister Rama has rejected calls to step down, asserting that his government will not be swayed by “noise” and describing the situation as part of a “digital cyclone.” The protests continue with no indication of de‑escalation.
