Albanian protests intensify over Kushner-linked projects
Overview
The ‘Flamingo Revolution’ has intensified as the movement against luxury resort projects in Albania enters its 100th day. While the unrest began over environmental concerns regarding the €4-billion Zvërnec project, a €1.4-billion Sazan Island investment, and a €4.7-billion Narta lagoon project, it has escalated into a major political uprising against systemic corruption and the government of Prime Minister Edi Rama.
New scrutiny has emerged regarding the Zvërnec development, managed by Jared Kushner’s Affinity Partners. Reports indicate that Albania Land Development, a company linked to the Trump family, transferred approximately $125 million to Artur Shehu to acquire land for the project. Shehu is currently under investigation by Albania’s Special Anti-Corruption Structure (SPAK) and European services for suspected involvement in international drug trafficking and money laundering. Local residents allege the land was originally seized through forged documents.
Protests have turned more volatile, with recent clashes in Tirana involving demonstrators throwing eggs and tomatoes at riot police as they attempted to reach parliament. At least seven individuals have been detained.
Prime Minister Rama continues to defend the investments as essential for economic growth, characterizing the protests as a sign of a ‘normal European country’ and suggesting mobilization is driven by social media algorithms and political opposition groups. However, activists continue to demand the repeal of 2024 environmental protection laws and the resignation of the Prime Minister, citing the destruction of vital habitats for flamingos, pelicans, and sea turtles.
