Albania protests continue over disputed Zvërnec coastal development

For almost seven weeks, activists and citizens have gathered nightly in Tirana's Skanderbeg Square, marching to the prime minister's office to demand the suspension of a planned luxury tourism project on the Zvërnec coast. The demonstrators oppose the construction of a high‑end resort linked to U.S. political figure Jared Kushner on nearby Sazan Island, arguing that the development threatens a protected wetland that hosts endangered species and migratory birds.

The movement, dubbed the "Flamingo Revolution," has broadened its focus to call for the resignation of Prime Minister Edi Rama, electoral reforms, and greater transparency in government decisions. Protesters also urge the dismissal of opposition leader Sali Berisha, framing the dispute as a wider critique of Albania's political system and environmental stewardship.
