Albanian police clash with protesters over Jared Kushner resort plan in Tirana
On July 23, Albanian police used water cannons and tear‑gas to disperse hundreds of demonstrators gathered outside the parliament in Tirana. Protesters, who threw eggs, bottles and other objects at officers, were chanting slogans such as “Thank you Trump for uniting us” and referring to the movement as the “flamingo revolution.” The clashes, which left five police officers injured and several demonstrators treated for chemical exposure, marked a rare violent episode in protests that have lasted nearly two months.
The demonstrations target a multi‑billion‑dollar luxury‑resort project on a protected wetland on the Adriatic coast, backed by U.S. investors Jared Kushner and Ivanka Trump. Activists accuse the government of corruption, lack of transparency and environmental damage to flamingos and other wildlife. Prime Minister Edi Rama has defended the development as vital for tourism and the economy, calling the protests “artificial” and politically motivated, while demonstrators demand his resignation.
The protests coincide with a parliamentary vote on a €4 million subsidy for a Kanye West concert, which further inflamed tensions. Albanian prosecutors are also investigating a Miami‑based businessman involved in the land deal for alleged forged title deeds and money‑laundering.
The unrest reflects broader concerns over foreign investment, environmental protection and political accountability in Albania.
