Albania's tourism slump hits Kosovo visitors amid price hikes and protests

The Albanian Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Sport reported 1,346,279 foreign visitors in June 2026, a modest 1.3 % increase over the previous year, but overall growth slowed sharply. The data show a loss of 51,190 visitors from Kosovo, the largest single‑market decline. Minister Blendi Gonxhja linked the slowdown to public protests and a tense climate, saying Albania lost about 97,000 visitors from its five main source markets. Several opinion pieces argue Albania has historically depended on Kosovo tourists and should apologise for past mistreatment. Rising accommodation prices, a stronger Albanian lek against the euro and competition from nearby beaches such as Shëngjin and Velipoja have driven many Kosovo holiday‑makers away from Durrës. In addition, tax‑inspection raids on tourism businesses during the peak season have disrupted operations and added further strain. While the sector still recorded a 6 % rise in total foreign arrivals from January to June 2026, cost pressures and negative perception threaten sustained growth.
