Albania upgrades HPV vaccine to 9-valent version
Albania is transitioning its national vaccination program for 13-year-olds from the 4-valent HPV vaccine to the 9-valent version. This update expands protection against a broader range of HPV types linked to precancerous lesions, cervical cancer, and other HPV-related malignancies. For the first time, the vaccine is also being administered to boys to help prevent transmission.
Health and Social Welfare Minister Klodiana Spahiu has urged parents to participate in the program, noting that the vaccines are certified and used within the European Union. Since the inception of the HPV vaccination program in Albania, 60,180 doses of the 4-valent vaccine have been administered.
In addition to the HPV update, preparations for seasonal flu vaccinations have begun. Authorities have secured 280,000 free doses for high-risk groups, including individuals over 65, people with chronic illnesses, pregnant women, and healthcare workers. The flu vaccine will cover the A H1N1, A H3N2, and B strains.
