HPV vaccine upgrades in Moldova and Albania
Overview
Balkan nations are upgrading their national immunization programs by transitioning from tetravalent to nonavalent HPV vaccines.
In Moldova, authorities plan to introduce the new vaccine by the end of 2026 to replace the current version that covers four types. While the new vaccine protects against nine types of the virus, health officials face challenges with immunization rates remaining below 50% due to parental hesitancy and misinformation.
Similarly, Albania is transitioning its program for 13-year-olds to the 9-valent version to expand protection against various malignancies. This update in Albania also includes the first-time administration of the vaccine to boys to assist in preventing transmission.
