Albanian Government Funds Kanye West Concert Amid Healthcare Funding Criticism

The Albanian state allocated roughly 4 million euros (about 4 billion lek) to sponsor a private concert by American rapper Kanye West. Journalists and activists have protested the spending, arguing that the money should address shortages in the national health system.

Journalist Osman Stafa highlighted that the University Hospital “Nënë Tereza” is publicly requesting donations for essential equipment such as ventilators, defibrillators and EKG machines, while the government diverts funds to the concert. Demonstrators gathered outside the prime minister’s office to denounce what they called an absurd use of public resources. The controversy underscores a broader debate over cultural promotion versus basic public services in Albania.
