Albanian High Prosecutorial Council criticised over Veliaj case

Attorney Plarent Ndreca, representing Tirana mayor Erion Veliaj, said the High Prosecutorial Council (KLP) is acting unlawfully after it postponed a session to 3 July and took a stance on the appointment of Ols Dados as prosecutor. Ndreca argued the council is becoming a party to illegality, turning an institutional matter into a legal conflict. He also explained Veliaj is not attending the trial because he is being kept in a “gold‑en glass cage”, which he says violates his dignity under the Helsinki Committee and European Court of Human Rights rulings. Ndreca called for full transparency and public access to the proceedings, criticizing restrictions on camera use and urging the courts to uphold citizens’ right to observe trials.
