Albanian Mayor Erion Veliaj Pushes for Fast Retrial After Constitutional Court Cancels Detention

Albania’s Constitutional Court annulled the High Court’s decision to keep mayor Erion Veliaj in pre‑trial detention, sending the case back for a full constitutional review. The court found the previous ruling lacked a complete assessment of the necessity and proportionality of the arrest and had not considered less restrictive measures.

In response, Veliaj’s legal team submitted a request to the Supreme Court asking that the retrial be accelerated. The defense argues that any delay harms Veliaj’s personal liberty, his ability to fulfil his duties as Tirana’s mayor, and raises concerns about the dignity‑impact of his confinement in a glass‑enclosed cell. The request calls for the court to examine whether continued detention is justified under constitutional standards and to explore alternative safeguards.
