Albanian police clash with protesters over luxury resort plans

Police in Tirana used water cannons, tear gas and pepper spray to disperse demonstrators gathered outside the Albanian parliament. The protesters threw eggs, flour, bottles and stones at MPs' cars and police forces, injuring three officers and one demonstrator and leading to at least six arrests.

The demonstrations, now in their fourth week, are directed at a proposed luxury resort on the protected Vjosa‑Narta coastline and Sazan Island, a project backed by U.S. investors including Jared Kushner and Ivanka Trump. Demonstrators demand transparency, protection of natural areas and the resignation of Prime Minister Edi Rama, accusing his government of corruption and favouring foreign investors.
