Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama faces mass resignation protests

Tens of thousands of demonstrators gathered in Tirana, with estimates ranging from 100,000 to 250,000 people, to demand the resignation of Prime Minister Edi Rama by 19:00 and to threaten the occupation of government buildings. The protests target a luxury resort project called “Zvrnec” and another development on Sazan Island, both linked to Jared Kushner and Ivanka Trump. Participants include residents from across Albania, members of the diaspora, and citizens from neighbouring Greece and Kosovo.

Rama has refused to step down and has pledged to continue the contested construction, citing economic development. Protesters countered, saying “We are not against development of the country; we are against arrogance and lack of transparency around projects that affect our lives.” The movement has escalated over weeks, with nightly rallies since late May and calls for broader political change. Authorities have not yet intervened, but the deadline looms and the risk of further escalation or occupation of state institutions remains high.
