Albanian protests erupt over Ivanka Trump-linked Adriatic tourism project

Mass demonstrations have erupted across Albanian cities against the government of Prime Minister Edi Rama and the proposed Adriatic tourism complex backed by investors linked to Ivanka Trump and former White House adviser Jared Kushner. Protesters, calling the movement the “Flamingo Revolution,” cite the Viosa‑Narta delta—a protected Natura 2000 wetland home to rare species such as the pink flamingo—as a target of a 1.4‑billion‑euro (later quoted at 4.7 billion euro) development plan to accommodate up to 10 000 guests.

The project, granted “strategic investor” status to Atlantic Incubation Partners LLC and the Affinity fund associated with Kushner, has drawn criticism for opaque funding, alleged private‑state collusion, and the removal of the area from environmental protection. Environmental NGOs stress that Viosa‑Narta is one of the Mediterranean’s most biodiverse zones, and they demand the reversal of the decree that stripped its protected status.
