Albanian protests persist, demand PM Rama's resignation

Demonstrations against the Albanian government have continued for more than 50 days, with the 52nd protest held in Tirana. Organisers are pressing for the resignation of Prime Minister Edi Rama, the dissolution of the current cabinet, and the repeal of several contested laws, including the investment project in Zvërnec and the so‑called "Mountain Package".

Analysts note that the protest movement is highly heterogeneous, comprising students, workers, doctors, engineers and other groups, and lacks a single leadership structure. While this decentralisation shields the protests from targeted crackdowns, it also hampers the creation of a formal governing assembly. The analyst Fitim Zekthi predicts a possible surge of activity in September‑October, but doubts that a unified parliamentary body will emerge.

Security forces have deployed strong measures around the parliament, with occasional interruptions of plenary sessions, yet the demonstrators have pledged to maintain daily rallies until their demands are met.
