Albert Heijn resumes grocery deliveries following cybersecurity incident

Albert Heijn has resumed home grocery deliveries for the first time in nearly two weeks following a cybersecurity incident at its parent company, Ahold Delhaize. The company took certain systems offline preventively, which rendered websites and apps inaccessible for a week.

Delivery capacity is currently limited to one-third of normal levels, though the supermarket chain plans to expand both product assortment and available delivery slots throughout the week. Customers whose previous orders were canceled will receive shopping credit.

The disruption has prompted discussions regarding food security in the Netherlands. Researchers from the Clingendael Institute and Erasmus University suggest that households should maintain an eight-day emergency food supply to increase resilience against systemic vulnerabilities, such as 'just-in-time' distribution failures caused by cyberattacks or international supply chain disruptions.
