Albert Komen Kipkechem arrested in Kericho for cybercrime
Albert Komen Kipkechem, also known as Jonathan Kiptum Barmasai, has been remanded in custody following his arrest in Kericho. He faces charges related to cybercrime and computer fraud involving the alleged theft of approximately Ksh 100 million from various financial institutions.
Kipkechem was brought before Milimani Senior Principal Magistrate Teresia Nyangena after failing to appear in court on three separate occasions. The prosecution successfully argued for his detention, noting that his previous bonds had been forfeited due to his absence. The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) highlighted him as a significant flight risk, noting he holds both a Kenyan citizenship and a Democratic Republic of Congo passport.
Investigators also expressed concern regarding his technical expertise, stating he has the ability to remotely access, encrypt, or delete digital evidence if permitted access to telecommunication devices. The magistrate declined requests to reinstate his bail, ordering him to remain in custody until November 5, 2026, when his sureties are expected to explain his failure to attend court proceedings.
