Cybercrime and online incitement arrests in Kenya

Overview

Kenyan authorities have conducted high-profile arrests involving digital offenses. In early October, Albert Komen Kipkechem, also known as Jonathan Kiptum Barmasai, was remanded in custody in Kericho facing charges of cybercrime and computer fraud. Prosecutors alleged he was involved in the theft of approximately Ksh 100 million from financial institutions and identified him as a flight risk due to his dual Kenyan and Democratic Republic of Congo citizenship.

Later in the month, detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations arrested Festus Kipkirui in Narok East. Kipkirui is suspected of using a Facebook page to engage in ethnic incitement by sharing inflammatory content targeting the Kikuyu community. He faces potential charges under the Computer Misuse and Cybercrimes Act and the National Cohesion and Integration Act.
