Alberta allocates $50 million to Amii to boost AI applications in public services

Alberta announced a $50 million investment in the Alberta Machine Intelligence Institute (Amii) to be delivered over five years. Premier Danielle Smith made the announcement at Platform Calgary. The funding will be split among five provincial ministries: the Ministries of Technology and Innovation and Advanced Education will each provide $15 million; the Ministry of Assisted Living and Social Services will contribute $10 million; and the Ministries of Primary and Preventative Health Services and Education and Childcare will each allocate $5 million.

The province says the money will be used to translate Amii’s research into concrete AI applications that improve public services, health care, education and workforce training. Amii, one of Canada’s three leading AI institutes, currently has more than 71 fellows and about 500 researchers, including Turing Award‑winner Richard Sutton. Alberta’s total investment in the institute exceeds $100 million since 2002, making this $50 million injection roughly half of all historic funding and signalling a stronger focus on practical AI deployment across the province.
