Canada AI strategy tackles adoption, workforce, transparency

May 2026 research showed Canadian SMEs lagging U.S. firms in AI use, prompting the C$2.3 billion “AI for All” plan which targets 60 % AI adoption in firms by 2034, up to 250 000 AI‑related jobs, expanded compute capacity and a Trusted AI Certification scheme. On 24 July the federal government opened a two‑month public consultation on AI transparency, led by AI Minister Evan Solomon. The process seeks input on five priority areas: detecting AI‑generated content, informing users of AI interaction, disclosing system capabilities and limits, tracking serious AI incidents, and monitoring autonomous agents. A TD Bank survey released alongside the consultation found 32 % of Canadians exaggerate their AI skills at work, 78 % see AI adoption as inevitable, yet only 37 % have received adequate employer training, underscoring persistent workforce gaps.

The consultation runs from 23 July to 23 September 2026. It was formally announced on 26 July by Minister Solomon, who reiterated the five priority areas. Concurrently, Manitoba scheduled public listening sessions on 10 August in Brandon and 12 August in Winnipeg to gather input on digital‑security measures, child‑online protection and the province’s new Public Sector Artificial Intelligence and Cybersecurity Governance Act. These provincial engagements are intended to feed into the nationwide consultation and shape forthcoming regulations on AI accountability and incident reporting.
