Alberta prepares for secession referendum as PM Carney calls for unity

As Alberta prepares for an October 19 referendum on whether to begin the legal process for secession from Canada, Prime Minister Mark Carney has issued a call for national unity. Carney described the vote as a “dangerous gamble” that could lead to years of uncertainty, particularly given increasing threats to Canadian sovereignty. He also emphasized that foreign governments, including the United States, should not interfere in the provincial election.

Alberta Premier Danielle Smith has cast her advance vote in favor of remaining in Canada, and her office noted ongoing cooperation with the federal government on energy and infrastructure. However, political tensions remain high. Former Premier Jason Kenney has urged the United Conservative Party to remove separatist supporters from its ranks to reaffirm its federalist roots.

Concerns regarding the referendum's impact have been raised by various sectors. Senator Paula Simons warned that the campaign could damage Alberta's economy by making researchers, entrepreneurs, and immigrants feel unwelcome. Meanwhile, non-permanent residents in the province have expressed unease regarding the political rhetoric. To ensure election integrity, Elections Alberta stated it verifies citizenship status through a national database to prevent fraudulent voting.
