Overview

As the October 19, 2026, referendum concludes, Albertans have voted to remain in Canada, rejecting the proposal to initiate the legal process for a future binding vote on secession. Official results from Elections Alberta show a 70.4 per cent voter turnout, the highest for a provincewide vote since at least 1975. Of the 1,876,973 ballots cast, 1,416,420 voters opted to stay in Confederation, while 460,553 supported initiating the process for a binding separation referendum.

The referendum featured ten questions. While voters rejected the secession process, they approved changes to provincial immigration policies but rejected proposals for the province to seize more power from the federal government. Leading up to the vote, 28 registered third-party advertisers raised a combined $2.05 million, with the separatist organization Let Alberta Decide being the largest fundraiser at $581,780. The Alberta government also conducted an advertising campaign initially described as a $4-million effort.

In the aftermath, political tensions have risen. Alberta NDP leader Naheed Nenshi has accused the governing United Conservative Party of attempting to gerrymander electoral boundaries in Lethbridge and Calgary to protect incumbents. Additionally, Premier Danielle Smith’s administration has moved to implement a loyalty declaration for UCP party board candidates, requiring them to acknowledge the referendum results. Prime Minister Mark Carney previously hailed the result as a victory for national unity, stating that Albertans chose to “build together” and “take care of each other.”
