Alberta First Nations mobilize for October 19 referendum
First Nations leaders in Alberta are mobilizing to increase voter turnout for an upcoming provincial referendum scheduled for October 19. The referendum includes 10 questions: nine regarding immigration and constitutional matters, and one concerning whether Alberta should remain part of Canada or hold a binding vote on separation.
Organizers from the Confederacy of Treaty Six First Nations are conducting workshops to build local teams to assist with voter outreach. Angel Houle, an organizer, emphasized the importance of participation, noting that ‘silence could be consent’ regarding the referendum's outcomes.
The referendum process has highlighted tensions between First Nations and Premier Danielle Smith’s United Conservative Party government, including a consequential lawsuit. While Smith has stated that First Nations are valued partners, some leaders argue that their people, lands, and treaties have been treated as an afterthought in the debate over provincial separation.
