Alberta independence petition meets signature threshold, court appeal pending

Elections Alberta announced that a citizen‑initiated petition calling for an Alberta independence referendum has satisfied the signature requirement of the Citizen Initiative Act. After statistical verification, an estimated 222,597 signatures were deemed valid, surpassing the 177,732 needed. The petition, titled “A Referendum Relating to Alberta Independence,” was organized by Mitch Sylvestre and the group Stay Free Alberta, and Chief Electoral Officer Gordon McClure confirmed it met the Act’s Section 6 criteria.

The petition’s progress remains blocked by a legal dispute. A June 29 decision by the Alberta Court of Appeal allowed the verification to proceed, but a prior ruling by Justice Shaina Leonard of the Court of King’s Bench halted the petition, citing failure to consult Indigenous peoples and potential violation of their rights. Stay Free Alberta has appealed the decision, and a partial stay permits the verification to stand while the appeal is resolved. Until the courts issue a final ruling, the referendum cannot move forward.
