Alberta launches regulated online gambling market with 22 operators
Alberta’s regulated iGaming market opened on July 13, ending the province’s single‑operator monopoly. Twenty‑two licensed platforms went live on day one, including major brands such as FanDuel, DraftKings, bet365, BetMGM and Caesars, while the government‑run Play Alberta continues to operate alongside them. A further 28 operators are registered but have not yet launched, indicating the market will expand in the coming months.
The Alberta Gaming, Liquor and Cannabis Commission (AGLC) licenses all operators, and the Alberta iGaming Corporation (AiGC) oversees the framework. All platforms must enforce responsible‑gambling measures, including age verification, deposit and time limits, and a province‑wide self‑exclusion system. Operators pay a 20 % tax on net revenue, with portions earmarked for First Nations, gambling‑addiction research and mental‑health programs.
Analysts project the regulated market could generate up to C$2.8 billion in revenue within two years, with up to 87 % of online gambling activity shifting from offshore sites. In parallel, independent reviewer CASINOenquirer released a guide that lists only AGLC‑registered online casinos, providing a vetted shortlist for Albertan players.
