Alberta iGaming market expands with new operator partnership

Overview

Alberta’s provincially regulated iGaming market opened on 13 July 2026 under the iGaming Alberta Act, with the Alberta Gaming, Liquor and Cannabis Commission (AGLC) handling licensing and the Alberta iGaming Corporation (AiGC) managing the marketplace. At launch, about 50 operators were registered and 22 platforms—including FanDuel, Draft-Kings, BetMGM, Caesars and the government-run PlayAlberta site—went live at midnight.

The 20% gross-gaming-revenue tax, plus earmarked 1% for problem-gambling programs and 2% for First Nations, is projected to generate roughly C$100 million in annual tax revenue once the market matures. Early data show strong first-time registrations and deposits, and analysts expect the regulated framework to capture 70% of the province’s previously grey-market activity.

In early August, Betty Casino, already operating in Ontario, entered Alberta and partnered with game supplier Playson to launch titles such as 4 Chili Amigos, Thunder Coins XXL and Rhino Coins—Playson’s first content in the province and a step toward broader Canadian coverage.

Following the launch, the Alberta government issued a request for expressions of interest to fund new gambling addiction services. These programs, which may include enhanced hotlines and 21-day bed-based treatment, would supplement existing services provided by Recovery Alberta. Funding for these initiatives is sourced from the 1% of revenue earmarked for “social responsibility initiatives.” Service Alberta Minister Dale Nally stated the regulated system aims to protect residents from black market operators, though he acknowledged the potential for an increase in gambling addiction. The Mental Health and Addiction Ministry noted that online gambling growth presents new challenges regarding mental health and financial stability.
