Alberta Launches Regulated Online Gambling Market, Expanding Canada’s iGaming Sector

On 13 July 2026 Alberta opened a regulated online gambling market, becoming the second Canadian province after Ontario to allow private operators. The market is overseen by the Alberta iGaming Corporation and the regulator Alberta Gaming, Liquor and Cannabis (AGLC). Roughly 50 operators registered before launch, with 22 platforms live at midnight, including major U.S. brands such as FanDuel, DraftKings, BetMGM and the public PlayAlberta site. The province expects the new framework to capture about 70 % of previously unregulated online betting and generate roughly C$100 million in annual tax revenue.

Betty Casino, already operating in Ontario, entered the Alberta market and partnered with game supplier Playson to offer titles such as 4 Chili Amigos, Thunder Coins XXL and Rhino Coins. The deal marks Playson’s first content launch in Alberta and expands its presence across Canada’s licensed iGaming markets.

Meanwhile, Ontario’s regulated market, launched in April 2022, has grown rapidly, recording more than $82.7 billion in wagers and $2.9 billion in gross gaming revenue in the 2024‑25 fiscal year, with 2.6 million active player accounts. An opinion piece highlights a sharp rise in gambling‑related harm, noting a 198 % increase in help‑seeking and a jump in problem‑gambling prevalence to about 11 % by the end of 2024. Critics argue that provincial funding for prevention and treatment remains insufficient relative to the market’s revenue.
