Alberta NDP challenges new voter list restriction rules in court

The Alberta NDP has filed a court challenge in Edmonton against new provincial government rules that restrict the amount of voter information shared with political parties. Under the new policy, Elections Alberta will only provide parties with the number of voters in each municipality and voting area, rather than the previously available names, addresses, phone numbers, and unique identification numbers.

NDP Leader Naheed Nenshi expressed concerns that the lack of detailed information could facilitate voter fraud during the upcoming October 19 referendum, as scrutineers may lack the necessary data to prevent multiple voting. The NDP argues the policy undermines the legal purpose of the provincial voter list.

Justice Minister Mickey Amery’s office stated the policy is a temporary measure intended to enhance privacy following a major data breach involving a separatist group earlier this year. Elections Alberta has indicated it will continue to use the detailed voter list to manage the referendum process.
