Alberta voter information rule dispute

The Alberta NDP has initiated a court challenge in Edmonton against new provincial government rules regarding voter information. The policy restricts the data shared with political parties to only the number of voters in each municipality and voting area, removing access to names, addresses, phone numbers, and unique identification numbers.

NDP Leader Naheed Nenshi argues that these restrictions could facilitate voter fraud during the upcoming October 19 referendum by preventing scrutineers from effectively verifying identities. The NDP maintains that the policy undermines the legal purpose of the provincial voter list.

In response, Justice Minister Mickey Amery’s office described the policy as a temporary measure designed to enhance privacy following a major data breach involving a separatist group earlier in the year. Elections Alberta has stated it will continue to use the detailed voter list to manage the referendum process.

Concurrently, recent polling indicates a shift in the provincial political landscape, with the governing United Conservative Party (UCP) and the NDP currently deadlocked at 41 per cent support each.
