Alberta political landscape shifts as UCP and NDP deadlock in polls

A new Janet Brown Opinion Research poll shows a deadlock in Alberta, with both the governing United Conservative Party (UCP) and the opposition New Democratic Party (NDP) holding 41 per cent support provincewide. This represents a significant shift from six months ago when the UCP held a comfortable lead.

Simultaneously, the Alberta NDP has filed a court challenge in Edmonton against new provincial rules that restrict the voter information shared with political parties. Under the new policy, Elections Alberta will only provide the number of voters in each municipality and voting area, rather than the names, addresses, and phone numbers previously available.

Justice Minister Mickey Amery’s office stated the change is a temporary measure to protect privacy following a previous data breach. However, NDP Leader Naheed Nenshi argues the restriction undermines provincial law and could facilitate voter fraud during the upcoming October 19 referendum by limiting the ability of scrutineers to verify voter identities.
