Alberta referendum faces scrutiny over AI misinformation and economic impacts

As Alberta approaches an October 19 referendum involving 10 questions—including the possibility of a binding vote on leaving Canada—experts are highlighting the influence of artificial intelligence on public discourse. A report from the Media Ecosystem Observatory found that AI chatbots and search engines provide inconsistent answers regarding the economic implications of independence, such as changes to taxes and pensions. Elections Alberta has issued a warning that these AI tools are not official sources and frequently provide incorrect information.

Economic assessments of a potential separation present a complex outlook. An advisory panel reviewing a University of Calgary study noted that a 'smooth' separation could see Alberta's GDP fall by 2.2 per cent and debt increase by $208.8 billion in the short term. However, long-term projections suggest that after 20 years, a cooperative scenario could result in a 3.4 per cent higher GDP and an annual surplus of $7.8 billion.

Additionally, the referendum includes questions regarding provincial jurisdiction. Two specific ballot items seek to amend the Canadian Constitution to allow provinces to opt out of federal programs without losing funding and to prioritize provincial laws over federal laws in areas of shared jurisdiction.
