Alberta referendum serves as case study for AI impact on elections

Experts are viewing the upcoming Alberta referendum as a significant case study on how artificial intelligence influences democratic processes and public perception. A report from the Media Ecosystem Observatory documented inconsistent responses from AI tools, such as Google AI Overview and OpenAI’s ChatGPT, when asked about the fiscal implications of an independent Alberta.

According to Aengus Bridgman, director of the Media Ecosystem Observatory, AI responses regarding taxes and pensions can fluctuate rapidly because the underlying predictive data is constantly changing. The report highlights that the referendum, which includes questions on whether to remain in Canada or hold a binding vote on leaving Confederation, occurs in an era where online influencers are gaining engagement at the expense of traditional news media and elected officials.

Elections Alberta has issued warnings that AI-powered chatbots and search engines are increasingly used to summarize information but are not official sources. The agency noted that these tools frequently cite incorrect information, complicating the ability to track and verify election-related discourse.
