Alberta separatism movement launches investment campaign ahead of referendum

As the Alberta separatism referendum approaches, pro-separatist groups have launched a campaign to attract international investment to a potential independent state. Mitch Sylvestre, leader of the Alberta Prosperity Project, announced an investment committee aimed at convincing institutional investors to fund the province once it secedes from Canada.

Sylvestre criticized the current federal leadership under Prime Minister Mark Carney, suggesting that the federal government has hindered Alberta’s economic potential. The separatist campaign aims to position Alberta as a resource-rich entity capable of attracting multinational conglomerates despite the lack of established national infrastructure like a central bank or military.

In a separate commentary at an energy conference in Calgary, former British Prime Minister David Cameron addressed the upcoming vote. Cameron argued that the Alberta situation differs from the Brexit referendum, stating that Alberta’s vote concerns the fundamental future of a country rather than membership in a trade association. He also noted that while referendums carry inherent risks, avoiding them can lead to built-up resentment.

Recent Ipsos polling indicates that a majority of Albertans currently intend to vote to remain within Canada.
