Alberta separatists accused of seeking U.S. support for independence
Reports indicate that Alberta separatist leaders have engaged in political interference by seeking support from United States officials and political operatives. An investigation by The Globe and Mail revealed that Republican political operatives traveled to Alberta to assist the separatist campaign, and leaders of the Alberta Prosperity Project met with U.S. State Department officials on three occasions last year.
Separatist leaders reportedly offered proposals to the U.S. involving access to Alberta’s fresh water, oil royalties, and new pipelines in exchange for American support for an independent Alberta. Conservative MP Dane Lloyd expressed concern over these reports, stating that no one has the right to promise away provincial resources or revenues to a foreign government.
Political scientist Duane Bratt characterized the actions as political interference rather than treason, noting that while such lobbying has occurred in Canadian history, the willingness of American political actors to engage is a significant concern. The controversy arises ahead of an October 19 referendum in which Albertans will vote on whether to hold a binding referendum on legal separation from Canada.
