Alberta to Launch Regulated Online Sports Betting Market in 2026
The Alberta government has approved a new framework for online sports betting that will go live on July 13, 2026. The iGaming Alberta Act (Bill 48) received Royal Assent in May 2025, establishing a provincially regulated market that will allow multiple private sportsbook and casino operators to compete under provincial oversight.
The Alberta Gaming, Liquor and Cannabis Commission (AGLC) will handle licensing, compliance checks and enforcement, while the Alberta iGaming Corporation will manage commercial agreements and the market’s business structure. Operators will be required to verify customers’ age, identity and location through geolocation technology, aiming to curb under‑age gambling and fraud.
The shift moves Albertans away from the current mix of a limited government platform and offshore sportsbooks, bringing more betting options, promotions and consumer‑protection standards into a supervised environment.
