Alberta voters reject secession process in historic referendum

In a historic referendum held on October 19, 2026, a large majority of Albertans voted to remain part of Canada, rejecting a proposal to initiate the legal process for a future binding vote on independence. Preliminary results from Elections Alberta indicate that approximately 76% of voters chose to stay within the federation, while roughly 24% supported starting the constitutional process toward separation.

The non-binding referendum included ten questions, five of which were related to immigration. While the primary question regarding secession saw a decisive outcome, counting continues for the remaining nine questions.

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney hailed the result as a victory for national unity, stating that Albertans chose to “build together” and “take care of each other.” Alberta Premier Danielle Smith also expressed satisfaction, noting that the vote showed widespread support for a stronger Alberta within a united Canada.

The vote occurred amid significant political tension, including concerns over trade relations with the United States and long-standing provincial grievances regarding federal environmental policies and resource management. Despite the defeat, separatist leaders indicated that the movement would continue to advocate for Alberta's interests.
