Alberta referendum results show overwhelming majority to remain in Canada

Unofficial results from the October 19 Alberta provincial referendum indicate that a significant majority of voters chose to remain part of Canada. Out of 1,876,973 ballots cast, 1,416,420 voters opted to stay in Confederation, while 460,553 supported initiating the process for a binding separation referendum.

The referendum, called by Premier Danielle Smith, included ten questions covering constitutional reform, immigration, and social policy. While the results affirm national unity, analysts note that the approximately 25 per cent of voters supporting the separation process remains a significant political force.

In the aftermath, political tensions have risen in the province. Alberta NDP leader Naheed Nenshi has accused the governing United Conservative Party (UCP) of attempting to gerrymander electoral boundaries in Lethbridge and Calgary to protect incumbents and dilute opposition support. Additionally, Premier Smith’s administration has moved to implement a loyalty declaration for UCP party board candidates, requiring them to acknowledge the referendum results.
